<image:title>Discography - Brittany Haas & Lena Jonsson - The Snake - Brittany Haas & Lena Jonsson - The Snake</image:title>
<image:caption>Brittany Haas and Lena Jonsson – two of the world's most sought after and buzzworthy fiddlers and composers – have announced their first duo album in nearly ten years, The Snake (due June 28 on Padiddle Records). The project follows the pair of innovative and emotive instrumentalists on a winding journey through 12 joyful and bold tunes (including 9 originals) which were written and recorded in East Nashville over two weeks in March 2023. Since their self-titled 2015 recording, they each have worked and toured with an array of critically-acclaimed acts – Hawktail, Punch Brothers, The Goodbye Girls, Lena Jonsson Trio, and many more – honing their writing, arranging, and playing skills and sharpening their points of view. The Snake is adventurous and unbridled, contained only by confidence, taste, and trust. It blends freedom and tradition, combining old-time's grit, classical’s grandeur, bluegrass’ improvisation, and Swedish folk’s groove – as only Brittany Haas and Lena Jonsson could. PDD-012. Released June 28th, 2024. Available in digital format.</image:caption>

<image:title>Discography - Väsen & Hawktail - Väsen & Hawktail - Väsen & Hawktail - Väsen & Hawktail</image:title>
<image:caption>The music of Väsen is foundational to the members of Hawktail. They avidly followed (and played) it as teenagers, and then as they moved through their music education and early professional careers. Encountering these young musicians at festivals, Väsen quickly recognized and appreciated the talents and clever musical inventiveness of Hawktail. Aspirations to collaborate rarely advance beyond the idea stage: “let’s try to do something together sometime!” But in this instance an application by Väsen to the Swedish Arts Council resulted in funding for two collaborative tours (one each in Sweden and the U.S.), which laid the groundwork for yet more touring and a week of recording in Sweden. Let’s hope it’s just the beginning of a long and fruitful musical relationship. This set, honed by those first tours, combines original tunes already established in each of the band’s repertoires (but newly arranged for this 5-piece ensemble), with freshly composed music for the collaboration. Usually the tune is a polska, that infinitely variable 3-beat rhythm that permeates Swedish traditional music, and universally just gets under your skin. In the hands of these five enormously talented acoustic musicians, it’s like mining for joy. - Robert Simonds PDD-015. Released September 20, 2024. Available in digital format.</image:caption>

<image:title>Discography - Ben Garnett - Kite's Keep - Ben Garnett - Kite’s Keep</image:title>
<image:caption>For fans of acoustic guitar music—this album is a revelation. The sophomore studio album by guitarist/composer Ben Garnett, KITE’S KEEP, presents an otherworld of acoustic storytelling. With the guitar as both centerpiece and collaborator, Garnett crafts vivid soundscapes that blend orchestral textures, conversational exchanges, and world-building atmospheres. Drawing from jazz, string band, and classical traditions, the music transcends genre, creating a space as intimate as it is innovative. Featuring an all-star cast—Darol Anger and Brittany Haas on fiddle, Ethan Jodziewicz and Paul Kowert on bass, Chris Eldridge on guitar, and Matt Glassmeyer on piano—the album thrives on their dynamic interplay and collective improvisation within Garnett’s inventive, yet familiar, compositions. Guitar enthusiasts will revel in Garnett’s ability to harness the instrument’s full power without dominating the narrative, while music lovers of all kinds will find refuge in these series of lush, resonant tapestries. With KITE’S KEEP, Garnett further establishes himself as one of modern acoustic music’s most forward-thinking voices, delivering a work that is both a consummate celebration of the acoustic guitar and sonic stronghold for listeners to return to time and time again. <image:caption>Sisters Natalie (cello) and Brittany Haas (fiddle) began their musical lives together, filling their childhood home with Bach suites and Old-Time tunes alike. It was on their own, however—following divergent paths through disparate musical traditions, countries, and cultures—that they both arrived as virtuosi and composers at the highest levels of contemporary string music. Fans of acoustic music can hardly mention one without referencing the other’s work. With HAAS, these singular musicians finally record together – in duo form – for the first time. It is a collaboration a lifetime in the making, and a music encompassing travels through time and through the world. From Nashville to Norway, the Celtic Isles to California, Natalie and Brittany have absorbed, adapted, and made their own world of music. The result? HAAS. PDD-011. Out May 26, 2023. <image:title>Discography - Ben Garnett - Imitation Fields - Ben Garnett - Imitation Fields</image:title>
<image:caption>IMITATION FIELDS is a vivid dreamscape of acoustic immediacy and electronic fantasy, and the debut solo album by guitarist/composer Ben Garnett. Heartbreaking melodies feel like an outpouring; deep trancelike pulses and unintelligible “sounds” articulate the mood; and the acoustic nuances wholly demonstrate the craft. The electronic manipulation is at times like the voice of a disarming narrator, turning momentarily from the live performance and speaking to you directly. Jazz-informed arrangements form the basis of an album you’d call “experimental string band” by any measure, and Ben’s ingenuity attracted the participation of some of the genre’s most acclaimed players. It’s refreshing to hear how Ben utilizes them. Produced by Chris Eldridge (Punch Brothers), the album features him on additional guitar, Brittany Haas and Billy Contreras (fiddles), Paul Kowert (bass), Matthew Davis (banjo), Dominick Leslie (mandolins), and a string quartet. Fans of progressive acoustic music will hear familiar sounds deployed in new ways, and all around music lovers will find themselves descending into a gorgeously unusual sonic naturescape. The music is new, relatable, and delivered with intent. Not short on ambition, IMITATION FIELDS culminates into a dense, beautiful debut that is self-assured and singular. PDD-009. <image:title>Discography - Sami Braman - Riveter - Sami Braman - Riveter</image:title>
<image:caption>From the blazing hot bow of Sami Braman comes Riveter—the debut solo record of original fiddle tunes, inventively written and masterfully performed by the traditional roots wunderkind. Known from her work with longtime Pacific Northwest string band, The Onlies, and as a member of Willie Watson’s band, here Braman celebrates the fiddle with a playful journey over the course of ten tracks that draws upon traditions from Appalachia to Ireland, Cape Breton to Norway, and beyond. Aptly named for the myriad fiddling styles Braman nimbly “rivets” together, Riveter pulses with an old-time groove throughout and Braman’s sheer joy in playing her instrument rolls off it all in waves. Within a musical tradition where fully original works are the exception, Braman sets herself apart—and her compositional chops are undeniable. Listening to “Train in the Wilderness” one can almost glimpse a steam train just as it rounds a bend somewhere deep in the Appalachian Mountains, while “Rogue River'' evokes the image of surging whitewater carving its way through a lush Pacific Northwest forest. Yet Riveter is not your ordinary old-time fare: Across the record Braman experiments with unconventional fiddling textures and rhythms that anything less than a virtuoso would fall short of pulling off. She excels in these moments, and in doing so, pushes us to imagine what traditionally-inspired folk music can be. PDD-010. Released April 7th, 2023. <image:caption>Place of Growth, acoustic quartet Hawktail’s third and most conceptual album, is a journey through the natural world—a journey designed for a single sitting. From the weightless joyride of “Updraft” to the reflective daydreaming of “Shallows”, each track sketches its own scenery. It's the season of sweet mandolin bells when the cry of a fiddle sounds at night, when guitars are played outdoors and upright bass propels the dance. This modest instrumentation—realistically captured—holds worlds within. Hawktail is: Brittany Haas, violin; Paul Kowert, bass; Jordan Tice, guitar; Dominick Leslie, mandolin. PDD-008. <image:caption>Hawktail’s second release “Formations” is a robust studio album of instrumental acoustic music produced by Hawktail and Chris Eldridge and mixed by Jacquire King. Daring in it’s concept, the pieces that comprise Formations are constructions of elemental components that challenge the category that their instrumentation suggests. Flush with orchestral sweeps and sparse vigils, with strains of the American South and the North Atlantic, this cosmopolitan sound is not what you’d expect from a string band. Released just over a year after their debut ‘Unless,’ 'Formations' illustrates the telepathic lucidity that an additional year of performing and creating has provided this ensemble. <image:title>Discography - Wes Corbett - Cascade - Wes Corbett - Cascade</image:title>
<image:caption>This highly anticipated first solo album from Wes is called Cascade: paying homage to the Pacific Northwest, where he grew up. He now lives in Nashville, TN (with many years as a staple of Boston’s thriving acoustic scene in between) and is a member of the Sam Bush Band. He was also a member of the progressive and influential acoustic bands Joy Kills Sorrow and The Bee Eaters, and Professor of Banjo at Berklee College of Music. Fans of bluegrass music - and the like - know him well. Wes refers to Cascade as “…a cumulative work, one that I’ve been writing for 10 years.” Cascade does indeed feature a decade’s worth of his original music, carefully selected and arranged for this project and the players involved. They are: Chris Eldridge (co-producer, guitar), Alex Hargreaves (fiddle), Sierra Hull (mandolin), Paul Kowert (bass), Casey Campbell (mandolin), Simon Chrisman (hammer dulcimer). The great care with which Wes approaches his work is evident in every moment of the album, and each track stands on it’s own. One of the stated goals for Cascade was to show that instrumental music can be as captivating as music with words, and that it can have at least as much emotional impact. With this in mind, it comes as no surprise that each new track shines bright, and is as compelling as the last. PDD-003 Released December 4, 2020. <image:title>Discography - Jordan Tice - Motivational Speakeasy - Jordan Tice - Motivational Speakeasy</image:title>
<image:caption>On his 5th record, singer-songwriter/guitarist, Jordan Tice breaks it down to just his voice and acoustic guitar. He combines witty musings on life, relationships, and time with his deft finger-picking acoustic guitar skills for a fresh take on a classic medium. Produced by Kenneth Pattengale (of The Milk Carton Kids), Motivational Speakeasy contains evidence of a variety of influences. From the classic Mississippi John Hurt style melodic blues of "Matter of Time" and "Goin on Down", to the dissonant Tom Waits-like shuffle of "Creation's Done" to the philosophical early Dylanesque chatter of "Walkin'" and "Where I'm At", Tice spins his influences into a variety of highly personal, well-crafted songs. In addition, the album contains 3 instrumental tracks where Tice showcases his narrative guitar-playing and composing with performances that range from British Isles inspired whistlefulness ("Stratford Waltz") to quirky ragtime ("Bachelorette Party", "Ghost Story"). Folk fans might recognize Jordan Tice as a member of the bluegrass supergroup, Hawktail, as well as his work with guitarist Dave Rawlings and comedian, Steve Martin. <image:caption>Says Brittany, “This record came out of a jam one night that felt nice. I got excited and wanted to capture it, so I called Critter and had him come over for dinner and then set up mics in the dining room of Mike’s empty new house. We moved a couple mattresses in around us and tracked for three nights. These tunes are ones I’ve loved for a long time, and it felt freeing to play them on the banjo. The two basses made the old melodies seem wide open and I think Paul and Mike’s personalities shine through. Hope you have fun listening, like we did playing.” Tom’s cover art is based on the mo’ai statues made by the Rapa Nui people on Easter Island. The juxtaposition of these monolithic figures with the instruments on the recording - banjo from West Africa and double bass from Europe - brings together different corners of the world into an imagined history of shared music. Banjo: Brittany Haas; Basses: Mike Gaisbacher & Paul Kowert. PDD-I-006 Released March 18, 2022. Available in digital format.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“Walking the high-wire, dancing on a razor’s edge—such is the dangerous and delicate ecstasy of the improvising musician, a euphoria that can only exist within the realms of the uncertain. It’s an uncertainty with which Dominick Leslie and Ric Robertson are intimately familiar. They face it head on with open hearts, for they know that’s where the magic is. Dom and Ric are sonic voyagers who have given themselves over here to the spontaneity of the universe, and it’s a delight to hear their ever-flowing unconscious exchange of ideas. It’s an exchange that’s built on trust, and shared history, musical tradition and invention. Most of all, it’s the joy that shines through.” - Logan Ledger Mandolins and Mandolas: Dominick Leslie, Ric Robertson. PDD-I-007 Released March 18, 2022. Available in digital format.</image:caption>
